Basildon United returned to Essex Senior League action at The Ho-Ho Stadium this afternoon (Saturday), entertaining in form Sawbridgeworth Town.
The visitors confidence could be seen early on as Aaron Thomas forced a save from Connor Wheatley and it was fully deserved when on 15 minutes James Mays drilled home from inside the box to put Sawbridgeworth in front.
The Bees were nearly further behind on 26 minutes when Nick Azzopardi shot over as he broke clear.
However, the home side were growing back into the game as the half progressed and Tommy Barton saw his flick cleared off the line on 31 minutes.
The equaliser came just two minutes later though, as fine work by Jack Adlington saw him play in Marcus Bowers who calmly found the corner.
Barton thought he had given The Bees a half time lead when he had the ball in the back of the net three minutes before the break, but the goal was disallowed for a foul on the visiting goalkeeper.
The second half began as a scrappy affair, but Sawbridgeworth soon began to get a grip on the game.
The building pressure eventually led to a goal on 61 minutes when George Pullen’s deflected shot restored the visitors lead.
The Bees struggled to find a rhythm and Adlington’s wayward shot wide was one of few chances created.
The game was put beyond all doubt though, when Toby Cleaver found space to slot home a third for Sawbridgeworth and seal the points.
