Basildon United travelled to Aveley's Parkside Stadium to face Tower Hamlets in an Essex Senior League encounter on Friday evening.
Bees knew that a good start would be important and Jack Adlington saw an early free kick saved.
There were only ten minutes on the clock though when the visitors made the breakthrough. Oli Spooner was tripped in the box and George Whitby slammed home the resulting penalty.
It was very nearly two on 17 minutes as Matt Brinklow broke clear of the defence and it took a smart stop by Hamlets' James Perrin to keep the score at 0-1.
Basildon were forced into a change on the half hour as an injured Tommy Barton made way for Joe Skeels.
It should have been two on 38 minutes when Jamie Brown's excellent take and cross saw Brinklow head the ball across the six yard box, where Adlington headed over from close range.
It was two shortly before the break though as Brown again displayed great skill, this time to beat two defenders and curl the ball into the top corner.
Into the second half and James Peagram came on as Bees second substitute to replace Matt Brinklow who had a tight hamstring.
It wasn't long before he was in the thick of the action firing a shot across the face of goal.
A third Bees goal came on 67 minutes when Adlington let fly from 20 yards and it was four two minutes later as Peagram found the corner.
Adlington nearly scored again, forcing a fine save from the home goalkeeper with seven minutes to play.
But there were to be no more goals and Basildon recorded a comfortable victory to keep their promotion bid on track.
